Overheard….about Buddy…

January 29, 2008 By: Pia Haas Category: Buddy, News, Press No Comments →

Elton John started wearing glasses just so he could look like his nearsighted idol.

Paul McCartney once admitted that at least 40 of the Beatles‘ own songs were influenced by him.

Lennon and McCartney cited that their band’s name, The Beatles was chosen partly in homage to Holly’s Crickets. The Beatles did a cover version of "Words of Love" that was an almost perfect reproduction of Holly’s version.

McCartney owns the publishing rights to Holly’s song catalogue.

"He made it okay to wear glasses. I WAS Buddy Holly"  – John Lennon

Bob Dylan said in his 1998 Grammy acceptance speech for his 1997 Time Out Of Mind winning Album of the Year:   "And I just want to say that when I was sixteen or seventeen years old, I went to see Buddy Holly play at Duluth National Guard Armory and I was three feet away from him…and he LOOKED at me. And I just have some sort of feeling that he was — I don’t know how or why — but I know he was with us all the time we were making this record in some kind of way."

"Holly passed it on via the Beatles and via us. He’s in everybody…This isn’t bad for a guy from Lubbock, Texas right? – Keith Richards (The Rolling Stones)

"Buddy Holly had been a very big early influence – particularly the way he looked, and I loved the look and sound of his Strat" – Eric Clapton

John Rochette and Eric Scott Anthony play Buddy’s band mates, The Crickets, in our production.  I chatted with them and they blabbed!

JOHN:  "I just got back to the mainland..  ha, yeah, Eric and I were just on a week long Caribbean cruise together.  So, to answer that question, yeah, him and I are great friends and roommates in Manhattan.  And, we met actually in Ohio
doing our first production of BUDDY at  Carousel Dinner Theatre.  I’m also very close with Pat as well.  I think the 3 of us will have a good time rockin’ in this one."  (more…)

A Director’s Insight!

January 18, 2008 By: Pia Haas Category: Buddy, Press No Comments →

Victoria Bussert, the director of our upcoming production of BUDDY, could not have put it more eloquently:

"Buddy Holly was labeled a "giant" on one of his album covers – an odd description for a skinny, slightly gawky young man from Lubbock, Texas. He did not inspire the awe and fan insanity that Elvis Presley did; nor was he able, like Chuck Berry, to stand above the fray and comment upon it. His hold on his many fans may be explained by his simple humanity. Though he was a star, he still sounded and looked like a regular guy, refusing to allow himself or his music to be altered or glamorized. Buddy Holly’s life was an enactment of the American dream, a real life rags to riches story. His music was fresh and new and spoke directly to his own generation. This was music that rallied against the artificiality of pop; it was a return to writing that was more basic and sincere, music that had the emotion, energy and spontaneity that modern adult life seemed to lack. This is a story that deserves to be told. Buddy was a brilliantly gifted and influential musician as well as an intriguing and complicated young man who remained true to himself in every aspect of his short life. Buddy Holly may not have been a giant, but in many ways he was a hero."
